To achieve the goals of the program, the students will paticipate in “Real-World” events such as retreats, scientific meetings and a journal club developed specifically for undergraduate students. Social activities will also be planned which will include the undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty. These social activities will further promote an environment in which the students will feel involved in the labs and departments in which they are training.
The student will prepare a couple of papers to outline the subject of their research project and to describe the results they obtain. At the end of each research experience, the student will also give a 15-minute oral presentation describing their research project.
This journal club will meet and cover a variety of scientific journals and papers. Students will meet to gain general knowledge of a paper and be assigned a portion of the paper to study more closely. The following week students will meet again to share what they have learned with one another.
UTHSCSA and UTSA together comprise an extensive Neuroscience community, and frequent Neuroscience-oriented seminars occur in various departments throughout the year. These have been integrated into a formal “Neuroscience Seminar Series” attended by graduate students, post-docs and faculty in neuroscience. START-UP students will have the opportunity to attend these seminars and occasionally meet with the speaker.
The departments of Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology all hold local off-campus research retreats during the academic year. Students, post-docs and faculty, present posters and give formal talks at these day-long events and a prominent neuroscientist is frequently invited as a guest speaker. START-UP students are invited to these retreats and are also encouraged to present their research either individually or with a member of their lab.
During the summer, students will go on field trips to prominent research facilities in San Antonio.
